When the highly-acclaimed social enterprise charity Training For Life opened a new high quality restaurant and training centre in the former St Barnabas Church, a Grade 2 Listed building in Dartmouth, it did so in the knowledge that the critical aspect of fire prevention and suppression within the kitchen area was well and truly fit for purpose.

The Charity worked to demanding budgets across the entire project and the unique nature of the listed building brought additional challenges as far as the kitchen facility was concerned. Kitchen space was at a premium and this brought its own set of problems as far as installation of a fire suppression system was concerned. In addition, because of the open plan design, odour control also became an important consideration.

To meet all the requirements, Nobel Fire Systems, the UK’s exclusive distributor of G.S. Environment’s AX-E environmental system were able to install a system within the available tight space that instantly provided;• Maximum fire protection, both prevention and cure
• A safe, clean and hygienic kitchen environment
• Savings of approximately 66% on both time and cost of installation versus alternative products.

The patented AX-E system has been developed to operate in four critical areas;
1. Eradication of Grease
The system can be automatically programmed to meet the demands of a particular kitchen. This ensures timely release of the ultra fine mist, which consists of a biological liquid specifically formulated to break down and remove fatty deposits and therefore stop any build up of grease.
2. Odour Control
The removal of fats and greases in the canopy, extraction and ventilation system effectively removes the sources of foul odours.
3. Enhanced Cleanliness
The system of pipework and nozzles extends across the entire kitchen canopy, ventilation and extraction systems enabling a level of coverage far beyond that offered by manual cleaning.
4. Reduced Fire Risk
The significant reduction in grease build up greatly reduces the fire load in the canopy and extraction system and therefore the chance of fire and firespread to other parts of the building.
