1 . Four Decades of The Ubiquitous Chip
- This year, The Ubiquitous Chip, one of Scotland’s most famous restaurants and long-time Glasgow institution, celebrates its 40th Anniversary.
In honour of this milestone, ‘The Chip’, (as it’s become affectionately known), will host a yearlong programme of celebrations and events including a world first sensory experience combining food and ground-breaking 3D digital art, a unique social media challenge and the launch of a commemorative book of memories and recipes.
Kicking off this exciting programme is the launch of an exclusive lunch menu designed by restaurateur Colin Clydesdale celebrating the styles of food served in the restaurant since it’s inception in 1971.
Since the restaurant was established on 11th January 1971, The Chip has enjoyed iconic status in Scotland and beyond. The Chip was an instant hit not only because renowned founder and original chef, Ronnie Clydesdale, was one of the first chefs in the UK to highlight the provenance of Scottish ingredients, but also as an incubator for the Glasgow’s artistic community.
Famously, Scottish playwright and artist, Alasdair Gray, created a mural in the restaurant’s leafy central courtyard and was thanked in food and drink.
Alasdair Gray will also be involved in the 40th Anniversary activity through a ground-breaking collaboration with contemporary artist Debs Norton on the world’s first sensory experience combining food and 3D interactive art which will be happening in March.
Commenting on the milestone, restaurateur Colin Clydesdale, said: “The 40th Anniversary activities will celebrate all that the Chip has embodied in the past, both in terms of food and Glasgow’s culture, while also giving an indication of future direction. We hope that customers old and new will join in our celebration and enjoy some of the unique experiences we have planned.”
